record collecting. Nice book to have if you want to spoil yourself—it's rather expensive.
Dictionary of Jazz. Hugues Panassie and Madeleine
Gautier. Cassell: 25/-.
An A-Z collection of jazz information. Good—but it will be more interesting to the advanced student.
Shining Trumpets by Rudi Blesh. Cassell: 21/-.
A stirringly-told history of jazz by a great authority. A big book, beautifully produced, and good value for money.
Eddie Condon's Treasury of Jazz. Dial Press
Inc.: 40/-.
A salty collection of jazz reminiscences edited by one of the great characters of white jazz. Being an American publication, it comes out a bit expensive here: if you can afford the luxury, it's marvellous background reading.
Modern Jazz—A Survey of Developments since
1939 by Alun Morgan and Raymond Horricks.
Gollancz: 15/-.
I think this is the only exhaustive written account of modern trends in jazz, and as such it is worth reading. The style is a bit heavy-going; but there's a lot of information.
Play That Music. Edited by Sinclair Traill. Faber:
12/-.
Warmly recommended for all those who want to play jazz. Edited by one of our greatest jazz critics, it's a collection of advice on jazz playing of the various instruments. Excellent value.
